These models were introduced as kits by Precision Masters. Later on, PM sold them ready-to-run. Circa 2005, Red Caboose acquired the entire line of PM cars and released them (RTR) in Red Caboose packaging. In 1998, Eastern Seaboard Models sold their own custom painted version of this model.
Generally speaking, Red Caboose splits production of their models between the US and China (just how much of what is done where varies by model and production run).
Here's what Red Caboose has to say about them -
Developed in the early 60's to carry more commodities and unload them quicker than any current car, these 100 ton cars are used to haul coal and aggrigates typically in unit trains. The Rapid Discharge function allows 100 tons of coal to the unloaded in as little as 15 seconds. This is accomplished when all 10 doors on the car floor open at once, literally removing the floor from under the car a nd allowing gravity to do the rest. Ortner cars are still in service today on many railroads both under railroad ownership and by private or government owned companies. N Scale Ortner Hopper Cars are available as decorated and undecorated Ready To Run Cars. Cars include a realistic coal load, are weighted and ship with Red Caboose Bettendorf Roller Bearing Trucks.
