MDC/Roundhouse released these cars in the late 1970s. They have been variously available as both kits and ready to run. In addition to being sold singly, they've also been packaged in 6 and 12 car sets. They are available with two different kinds of doors - Youngstown and "Pickens". The Pickens door is the one with the large square panel (to hold the Pickens logo).
Athearn acquired all the old MDC/Roundhouse tooling circa 2005 and reissued these cars in Athearn packaging (now referred to as "Berwick" box cars) -
The prototype for this model was built by Berwick Forge & Fabricating starting in 1973.
